Whenever I think about doing a full Dragonball rewatch, I always end up asking the same question: should Dragonball GT be included, or is it completely skippable? This debate has followed the series for years because GT sits in such a strange place within the franchise. It continues the story after Dragonball Z, features older versions of familiar characters, introduces Super Saiyan 4, and gives us one of the most memorable endings in Dragonball history. At the same time, it was not adapted from an Akira Toriyama manga, parts of its story are inconsistent, and many fans consider it separate from the main continuity.

Personally, I do not think GT is required to understand the larger Dragonball story. If someone only wants to follow the main continuity from the original Dragonball through Dragonball Z, Dragonball Super, and Dragonball Daima, they can skip GT without becoming confused. However, I also do not believe that being technically skippable means it has no value. If the goal is to experience the full history of the franchise instead of only following canon, I think GT deserves a place in the rewatch.

GT Is Not Necessary to Understand the Main Continuity

The strongest argument for skipping GT is simple: the current Dragonball story does not depend on it. You can finish Dragonball Z and continue into Dragonball Super without needing to know anything about the Black Star Dragon Balls, Baby, Super Android 17, or the Shadow Dragons. None of those events are necessary to understand Beerus, the multiverse, the Tournament of Power, Ultra Instinct, or anything else that happens in Super.

That makes GT different from the other major series. The original Dragonball leads directly into Dragonball Z, and Z establishes almost everything that later stories build upon. GT is more like an alternate continuation of that ending. It uses the same characters and begins after a time skip, but its events are not treated as required background for the current storyline. From a continuity standpoint, skipping it is completely reasonable.

Skippable Does Not Mean Worthless

This is where I think the conversation becomes too extreme. Some fans hear that GT is not part of the main continuity and immediately decide that nothing in it matters. I disagree with that mindset because Dragonball has always been bigger than the question of what is canon. Movies, games, alternate timelines, and non-canon transformations have contributed some of the franchise’s most beloved ideas.

GT introduced concepts that are still celebrated today. Super Saiyan 4 remains one of the most popular transformations in the entire franchise. Baby is a villain connected directly to the Saiyans’ violent history with the Tuffles, which gives his hatred a level of personal meaning that many Dragonball villains do not have. The Shadow Dragon Saga also explores the consequences of repeatedly using the Dragon Balls, which is one of the most natural ideas the franchise could have developed.

Even when GT does not execute every idea perfectly, it still offers concepts worth experiencing.

The Early Episodes Are the Hardest Part of the Rewatch

I understand why people struggle with GT because the opening portion can feel slow. Turning Goku into a child and sending him into space with Pan and Trunks was meant to bring back the adventure style of the original Dragonball. On paper, that makes sense. The problem is that the series does not immediately capture the same charm, humor, or sense of discovery that made the original journey so memorable.

The Black Star Dragon Ball Saga has entertaining moments, but it can feel disconnected from the more intense storylines fans had just finished watching in Dragonball Z. After battles against Frieza, Cell, and Majin Buu, the shift toward lighter space adventures may feel like the series has moved backward. Some of the planets and side characters also lack the impact needed to carry an extended journey.

For me, this is the section most likely to make someone consider skipping the entire series. However, I think GT becomes more focused once Baby is introduced.

The Baby Saga Is Where GT Finds Its Identity

If there is one part of GT that I think every Dragonball fan should experience, it is the Baby Saga. Baby is one of the most interesting villains in the franchise because his motivation is tied directly to the sins of the Saiyan race. He is not attacking Earth simply because he wants power or destruction. He wants revenge against the people responsible for the downfall of the Tuffles.

That history makes his conflict with Vegeta especially meaningful. Baby taking control of Vegeta’s body is more than a random power-up because Vegeta represents the royal bloodline of the people Baby hates. The story also puts Goku in a position where he has to recover his lost power, regain his tail, and eventually unlock Super Saiyan 4.

Super Saiyan 4 still stands out because it reconnects Saiyan power with the Great Ape transformation. Instead of relying only on divine energy or a new hair color, it feels connected to the biological and primal identity of the Saiyans. Regardless of how someone feels about GT as a whole, the transformation has earned its place in Dragonball history.

Super Android 17 Is the Most Skippable Major Arc

If I had to identify one part of GT that feels truly optional, it would be the Super Android 17 Saga. The concept of Android 17 being manipulated from Hell and fused with another version of himself could have been interesting, but the arc feels rushed and underdeveloped. Major villains return briefly, characters make questionable decisions, and Super Android 17’s abilities create inconsistencies that are not always explained clearly.

The arc also ends so quickly that it never reaches the emotional or narrative weight of the Baby Saga or the Shadow Dragon Saga. There are memorable moments, including Android 18 confronting 17 after Krillin’s death, but the overall storyline feels more like a bridge between GT’s stronger ideas.

During a full rewatch, I would still watch it for completion, but I would completely understand someone using a viewing guide or moving through it faster than the rest of the series.

The Shadow Dragons Are Too Important to Ignore

The Shadow Dragon Saga is probably the best argument against skipping GT entirely. For years, the heroes used the Dragon Balls to solve almost every major crisis. They revived friends, restored planets, erased damage, and repeatedly avoided the permanent consequences of tragedy. GT finally asks what would happen if that constant use created a problem of its own.

That is a brilliant concept.

The execution varies because some of the Shadow Dragons feel more like temporary obstacles than serious villains, but the central idea is one of the strongest in Dragonball. Syn Shenron and Omega Shenron also provide a threat that feels appropriate for the end of the series. The final battle forces Goku, Vegeta, and the people of Earth to confront the consequences of relying on the Dragon Balls for so long.

The ending also gives GT a level of emotional weight that many fans still appreciate, even if they dislike the rest of the show.

GT’s Ending Changes How I View the Series

One reason I can never call GT completely skippable is because of its final episode. Goku’s departure, his connection to Shenron, and the montage through the history of Dragonball create a genuine sense of closure. It feels like the franchise is saying goodbye not just to Goku, but to the audience that followed him from childhood.

The ending is intentionally mysterious. It does not clearly explain every detail about what happened to Goku, and I think that works in its favor. By that point, Goku feels less like an ordinary fighter and more like a legend who has become permanently connected to the Dragon Balls.

Even people who criticize GT often admit that its ending is one of the most emotional conclusions in the franchise. For me, that alone gives the series value during a complete rewatch.

Should New Fans Watch It on Their First Rewatch?

For a newcomer, I would recommend watching the main continuity first. Start with the original Dragonball, continue through Dragonball Z, and then move into Dragonball Super and Daima depending on the order they prefer. That gives them a clear understanding of the primary storyline without creating confusion about where GT fits.

After that, I would treat GT as an alternate sequel and watch it with the right expectations. Do not expect it to connect directly to Super. Do not expect every idea to be executed perfectly. Instead, approach it as a different interpretation of what could have happened after the end of Z.

That mindset makes GT much easier to appreciate.

My Final Verdict

So, is Dragonball GT skippable during a full rewatch? Technically, yes. If someone only cares about the main continuity, they can skip it without missing anything necessary for the current story. It is not required viewing in the same way that Dragonball and Dragonball Z are.

However, if someone says they are rewatching the entire Dragonball franchise, I do not think the experience feels complete without GT. It introduced Super Saiyan 4, gave us Baby and the Shadow Dragons, explored the consequences of the Dragon Balls, and delivered one of the most emotional endings in the series. Its flaws are real, but so are its contributions.

I would not tell anyone that they have to love GT. I would tell them to watch it at least once and form their own opinion. Dragonball is too large and too influential to reduce every discussion to canon versus non-canon. Sometimes a series can be imperfect, separate from the main timeline, and still be an important part of the franchise’s history.

One of the biggest misconceptions I see in the Dragon Ball community is that Bulma left Yamcha because Vegeta came along. Over the years, I’ve seen people paint Yamcha as the victim and Vegeta as the guy who “stole” his girlfriend. But when you actually look at the story Toriyama told, that’s not what happened at all.

The truth is that Yamcha and Bulma’s relationship had been falling apart long before Vegeta became part of the picture. Their personalities constantly clashed, trust became an issue, and by the time the Android Saga rolled around, their relationship had already run its course. Vegeta wasn’t the reason it ended—he simply entered the picture after it was already over.

Yamcha’s Biggest Problem Was His Reputation Around Women

From the beginning of Dragon Ball, Yamcha had an interesting relationship with women. Ironically, he was originally terrified of talking to girls, but as the series progressed, that fear disappeared and he became known as someone women naturally gravitated toward.

Bulma repeatedly expressed concerns about other women flirting with Yamcha. More importantly, Dragon Ball eventually makes it clear that Yamcha wasn’t exactly helping his case.

Future Trunks outright tells Goku that Bulma and Yamcha broke up because Yamcha was unfaithful. Even years later, Bulma still jokes about Yamcha’s wandering eye, making it clear that the relationship ended because trust had completely broken down.

Whether every accusation was shown on screen doesn’t really matter because Toriyama himself wrote the outcome. By the time we reach Dragon Ball Z, the series presents Yamcha’s cheating as the primary reason the relationship failed.

Once trust disappears in a relationship, it’s incredibly difficult to rebuild.

Bulma Wasn’t Completely Innocent Either

That being said, I don’t think it’s fair to place all the blame on Yamcha.

Bulma has always been one of Dragon Ball’s most emotional and outspoken characters. She could be impatient, possessive, and extremely jealous whenever another woman showed interest in Yamcha. Even during the original Dragon Ball, their relationship was filled with arguments, misunderstandings, and moments where both of them frustrated each other.

Bulma wanted someone who made her feel secure, while Yamcha constantly found himself in situations that fueled her insecurities.

That’s not exactly a recipe for a healthy relationship.

Even if Yamcha had never cheated, it’s hard to ignore how often they argued or how incompatible they sometimes appeared. Their personalities simply weren’t growing in the same direction.

Vegeta Didn’t “Steal” Bulma

One thing I think fans get wrong is acting like Vegeta swooped in and broke them apart.

That’s not what happened.

By the time Vegeta and Bulma became involved, Bulma and Yamcha had already ended their relationship. There wasn’t some dramatic love triangle where Vegeta competed with Yamcha for her affection. In fact, Vegeta wasn’t even remotely interested in romance during most of that period.

Their relationship happened almost unexpectedly.

After the battle with Frieza, Vegeta remained on Earth because he had nowhere else to go. Bulma allowed him to stay at Capsule Corporation, and over time the two developed a relationship that neither of them probably saw coming.

It wasn’t planned.

It wasn’t forced.

It was simply two adults whose lives crossed paths after another relationship had already ended.

Why Vegeta Ended Up Being a Better Match

This is probably the part that surprises people the most.

If you watched Vegeta during the Saiyan Saga or Namek Saga, you’d probably laugh if someone told you he’d eventually become Bulma’s husband. He was arrogant, ruthless, and cared about almost nothing except becoming stronger than Goku.

But that’s exactly why their relationship is so interesting.

Bulma challenged Vegeta in ways nobody else did. She wasn’t intimidated by him, and she certainly wasn’t afraid to put him in his place. At the same time, Vegeta slowly began changing because of the life he built on Earth. Having Bulma and eventually Trunks gave him something he had never truly experienced before—a family.

Unlike Yamcha, Vegeta’s biggest character development happened after entering that relationship.

Sometimes Relationships Simply Run Their Course

One thing I appreciate about Toriyama’s writing is that he didn’t force Yamcha and Bulma to stay together just because they were an early Dragon Ball couple.

Relationships end.

People grow apart.

Sometimes trust is broken beyond repair.

That’s exactly what happened here.

Yamcha and Bulma weren’t evil people. They just stopped being the right people for each other. One relationship fell apart while another unexpectedly grew into one of Dragon Ball’s most iconic couples.

Final Thoughts

When I look back at Yamcha and Bulma’s relationship, I don’t think the real story is about Vegeta replacing Yamcha. I think it’s about compatibility, trust, and personal growth.

Yamcha’s repeated flirting and implied infidelity damaged the foundation of his relationship with Bulma, while Bulma’s jealousy and frustration only made those cracks more obvious. By the time Vegeta entered the picture, the relationship had already reached its end.

Ironically, Bulma ended up with the person nobody expected. A Saiyan prince who once wanted to conquer Earth became the husband and father who built a life with her. Meanwhile, Yamcha remained one of Earth’s greatest heroes, even if his romantic relationship with Bulma wasn’t meant to last.

Sometimes the right relationship isn’t the first one. Sometimes it’s the one that helps both people become better than they were before.

Dragonball is one of the biggest anime franchises in the world, and every year new fans discover it for the very first time. Whether someone starts with the original Dragonball, Dragonball Z, Dragonball Super, Daima, Sparking! ZERO, or even through social media clips, the important thing is that they’re finding something to love about the series. As someone who’s been creating Dragon Ball content for years, I love seeing new people join the community because fresh perspectives keep the fandom alive.

Unfortunately, I’ve also noticed a growing problem. Some fans in the Dragonball community aren’t interested in welcoming new fans—they’re interested in proving they’re smarter than everyone else. Between extreme powerscaling debates and fans who treat Dragon Ball knowledge like a competition, it’s becoming harder for newcomers to simply enjoy the series without feeling like they’re being tested.

When Every Conversation Turns Into a Debate

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with powerscaling. In fact, I think it’s one of the reasons Dragon Ball has remained relevant for decades. Asking whether Goku could beat Jiren, debating Ultra Ego versus Ultra Instinct, or comparing different eras of Vegeta can be genuinely fun when everyone is respectful.

The problem starts when powerscaling becomes the only way people know how to engage with Dragon Ball.

I’ve seen someone make an appreciation post about Gohan, only for the comments to immediately become arguments about whether he’s stronger than Broly. Someone shares their favorite transformation, and instead of discussing why they love it, people start telling them why it’s “objectively wrong.” Even simple conversations about favorite arcs somehow become essays about power levels instead of celebrating what made those stories memorable.

At that point, the discussion stops being enjoyable and starts feeling like an argument waiting to happen.

Not Everything Needs to Be “Debunked”

One trend I’ve noticed over the past few years is the obsession with correcting people.

Someone says they think Future Trunks is their favorite character.

“Actually...”

Someone says they enjoyed Dragon Ball GT.

“Actually...”

Someone says they think Beast Gohan is one of the strongest characters.

“Actually...”

There’s a difference between having a discussion and constantly trying to prove someone wrong. Dragon Ball is supposed to be fun. It isn’t a college exam where everyone has to defend every opinion with scans, guidebooks, and chapter numbers.

Sometimes people simply like a character because they grew up with them.

That should be enough.

Elitism Doesn’t Create Better Fans

One thing I’ve never understood is why some fans act like watching Dragon Ball is some kind of exclusive club. If someone only watches the anime and hasn’t read the manga, they’re told their opinion doesn’t matter. If someone enjoys Dragon Ball Daima, they’re told they don’t understand “real Dragon Ball.”

Who does that help?

Every longtime fan was once a newcomer. None of us were born knowing every transformation, every saga, or every piece of Dragon Ball lore. We all learned because we enjoyed the series, not because someone interrogated us about obscure facts before allowing us to participate.

A healthy fandom should encourage curiosity, not punish it.

Women Still Deal With an Extra Layer of Gatekeeping

This is the part that hits closest to home for me.

As a woman who creates Dragon Ball content, I’ve experienced firsthand how differently women are treated in this community. Instead of discussing the content we create, some people immediately assume we don’t know what we’re talking about. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve seen women asked to “prove they’re real fans” by answering trivia questions that men are almost never asked.

Imagine introducing yourself as a Dragonball fan and your first interaction is someone trying to quiz you instead of having a conversation.

That’s exhausting.

What’s even more frustrating is that many women genuinely love Dragonball. They’re collecting figures, reading the manga, attending conventions, playing the games, and creating incredible content. Yet some people still assume they’re only here for attention or because Dragonball suddenly became popular.

That mindset doesn’t protect the community.

It pushes people away from it.

Being Knowledgeable Isn’t the Same as Being Welcoming

I love learning obscure Dragonball facts. I enjoy reading interviews, comparing manga panels, discussing lore, and diving into character analysis. Having knowledge about the series is great.

Using that knowledge to belittle other fans isn’t.

There’s a huge difference between sharing information and using information as a weapon. The best Dragonball fans I’ve met are the ones who get excited when someone asks a question because it gives them an opportunity to share something they love.

The worst are the ones who treat every conversation like an opportunity to establish dominance.

One grows the community.

The other shrinks it.

Dragonball Is Bigger Than Power Levels

Sometimes I think people forget why Dragonball became so successful in the first place. Yes, the fights are incredible. Yes, the transformations are iconic.

But Dragonball is also about adventure, perseverance, friendships, family, redemption, sacrifice, and constantly striving to become a better version of yourself. Those themes are why the series has connected with generations of fans around the world.

If every conversation is reduced to “Who wins?” or “Your opinion is wrong,” we’re missing so much of what makes Dragon Ball special.

Not every fan experiences the series in the same way, and that’s okay.

Final Thoughts

I don’t think powerscaling is ruining Dragonball. I don’t think having deep knowledge of the series is ruining Dragon Ball either. Both can make the fandom more enjoyable when they’re approached with the right attitude.

What hurts the community is when powerscaling becomes elitism and knowledge becomes gatekeeping.

If new fans are afraid to ask questions because they’ll be mocked, that’s a problem. If women have to constantly prove they belong before their opinions are respected, that’s a problem. If every discussion turns into a competition over who knows more instead of celebrating a series we all love, that’s a problem too.

Dragon Ball has survived for decades because it continues to bring new people into its world. The community should reflect that same spirit. Instead of trying to decide who qualifies as a “real fan,” maybe we should spend more time doing what brought us here in the first place—sharing our love for Dragon Ball.

This is probably going to be one of my hotter Dragon Ball takes, but it’s something I’ve been thinking about for years. I genuinely believe Dragon Ball Z Abridged changed the way a large portion of the fandom views Dragon Ball, and not necessarily for the better.

Before anyone grabs their pitchforks, I’m not saying Team Four Star was trying to hurt the franchise. Dragon Ball Z Abridged was always meant to be a parody, and that’s completely fine. The problem is that somewhere along the way, many fans stopped treating it like a parody and started treating it like an alternative version of Dragon Ball. Over time, jokes became “facts,” memes replaced actual character analysis, and serious discussions about the series became flooded with references that were never part of the original story.

In my opinion, that’s had a lasting impact on how people talk about Dragon Ball today.

Goku’s Reputation Took the Biggest Hit

If there’s one character who suffered the most from this, it’s Goku.

Ask someone online about Goku today, and there’s a good chance you’ll hear the same responses: “He’s a terrible father,” “He only cares about fighting,” or “He doesn’t care about his family.” While Goku certainly isn’t a perfect parent, many of these criticisms have become exaggerated to the point where they barely resemble the character Akira Toriyama actually wrote.

Dragon Ball Z Abridged leaned heavily into those jokes because that’s what parody does. It exaggerates personality traits for comedic effect. The problem is that a lot of fans now repeat those jokes during serious discussions as if they’re supported by the manga.

They’re not.

When I go back and read Dragon Ball, I see a flawed but caring father who repeatedly sacrifices himself to protect his family and the Earth. I don’t see the exaggerated version that’s become so common in internet discussions.

Memes Started Replacing Actual Conversations

One of my biggest frustrations with modern Dragon Ball discussions is how often they revolve around memes instead of the source material. Bring up Piccolo, and someone immediately says he’s Gohan’s real dad. Mention Vegeta, and people start quoting parody lines instead of talking about his incredible character development. Talk about Goku’s decisions, and you’ll almost always get a joke before you get an actual analysis. At some point, it feels like parts of the fandom stopped discussing Dragon Ball and started discussing Dragon Ball Z Abridged.

As someone who genuinely enjoys analyzing the story, that’s disappointing.

The Manga Tells a Very Different Story

One thing I’ve always encouraged people to do is go back and actually read the manga.

When you remove years of internet jokes, many of the characters feel completely different. Goku isn’t nearly as clueless as people make him out to be. Vegeta’s growth feels even more meaningful. Piccolo’s role in Gohan’s life is still important, but it never diminishes Goku’s relationship with his son the way memes often suggest.

The manga provides nuance that internet culture has slowly stripped away. Unfortunately, I think many newer fans experience Dragon Ball through clips, memes, and parody content before they ever read the original story.

That shapes their perception from the very beginning.

The Fandom Has Helped Keep These Jokes Alive

To be fair, I don’t think all of this falls on Dragon Ball Z Abridged.

The fandom deserves plenty of responsibility, too.

A joke is funny the first few times you hear it. Maybe even the hundredth time. But after more than a decade of repeating the exact same jokes, they’ve started to overshadow genuine discussions about the series. Instead of debating character motivations, themes, or story decisions, conversations often get reduced to recycled punchlines. That’s not the kind of Dragon Ball community I enjoy being part of.

I’d much rather debate why Goku made a certain decision than hear the same “bad dad” joke for the thousandth time.

There’s Nothing Wrong With Enjoying the Parody

I want to make one thing clear: if you enjoy Dragon Ball Z Abridged, that’s completely fine. Millions of people found it entertaining, and there’s no denying the amount of work Team Four Star put into their series.

My issue has never been with the parody itself.

My issue is with how some fans have allowed the parody to influence their understanding of the original story. Dragon Ball Z Abridged should complement Dragon Ball, not replace it in people’s minds.

Unfortunately, I think that’s exactly what happened for a portion of the fandom.

Final Thoughts

When I ask whether Dragon Ball Z Abridged ruined the mindset of Dragon Ball fans, I’m not saying it ruined Dragon Ball itself. The series remains one of the greatest manga and anime franchises ever created.

What I do think it changed is how many people approach discussions about the series. Too often, fans rely on parody, memes, and long-running internet jokes instead of going back to the source material. As a result, characters like Goku have developed reputations that don’t always reflect who they actually are in the manga.

For me, Dragon Ball has always been at its best when it’s discussed on its own merits. The jokes can be funny, and the memes can have their place, but they shouldn’t become the lens through which we judge every character and every moment in the story.

Sometimes the best way to appreciate Dragon Ball is to close the meme page, open the manga, and let Toriyama’s work speak for itself.

When Dragon Ball fans look back at the Moro Arc, most of the attention goes to Ultra Instinct Goku, Vegeta’s Spirit Fission training, or Moro’s eventual fusion with Earth. However, one of the most overlooked moments in the entire arc happened long before any of that. There was a brief period where Majin Buu had a legitimate chance to stop Moro before he became the unstoppable threat that nearly destroyed Universe 7.

I’ve always found this fascinating because unlike most Dragon Ball “what if” scenarios that require a major change to the story, this one almost happened. Buu wasn’t getting overwhelmed. He wasn’t being treated as comic relief. He wasn’t sleeping through the crisis. For one of the few times in Dragon Ball Super, Buu was actually the perfect fighter for the situation, and Moro was struggling because of it.

If Buu had managed to finish the fight before Moro reached the Dragon Balls on Namek and restored his power, the entire arc would have unfolded differently.

Majin Buu Had Something No Other Fighter Possessed

What made Buu such a dangerous opponent for Moro wasn’t simply his strength. It was the fact that he carried the power and memories of the Grand Supreme Kai. Throughout the early portions of the arc, we learn that the Grand Supreme Kai had fought Moro millions of years ago and possessed abilities that directly countered Moro’s magic.

This created a unique situation where Moro’s greatest weapon suddenly became far less effective. Throughout the arc, we watched Goku, Vegeta, and countless others struggle against Moro’s ability to absorb energy and manipulate magical power. When Buu entered the fight, however, Moro was forced into unfamiliar territory. Instead of controlling the battle, he found himself dealing with techniques and abilities that he hadn’t faced since his original defeat at the hands of the Supreme Kais.

The fight immediately felt different because for once, Moro wasn’t dictating the pace.

Moro Was Already Showing Signs of Trouble

One thing that often gets forgotten is just how vulnerable Moro actually was during this stage of the story. Before he regained his full power, Moro was operating on borrowed time. His body had aged tremendously during his imprisonment, and although his abilities remained dangerous, he wasn’t yet the monster who would later challenge Ultra Instinct.

During his encounter with Buu, there were several moments where Moro appeared visibly frustrated. The Grand Supreme Kai’s influence was disrupting his plans, sealing aspects of his power, and forcing him into situations where his usual tactics weren’t producing results. Instead of watching another hero desperately search for a way to counter Moro’s abilities, readers were watching Moro search for answers.

That reversal is what makes this scenario so interesting. For a brief moment, it genuinely felt like the villain was losing control of the situation.

The Importance of the Namekian Dragonballs

The biggest turning point in the Moro Arc wasn’t a transformation or a new technique. It was Moro reaching Namek and using the Dragon Balls to restore the power he had lost over millions of years.

Without that wish, everything changes.
