Dragonball Super Is Really Coming Back! Beerus, Resurrection ‘F,’ and Universe 6 vs. 7 Are Getting Another Chance

This Is Starting to Feel Like More Than a Simple Remaster

I’ve been cautiously optimistic about Dragonball Super: Beerus since Toei first announced it, mostly because I wanted to understand what the purpose of revisiting Dragonball Super actually was. We already have Battle of Gods. We already have the original Dragonball Super anime. We have watched Goku fight Beerus more than once. So if you’re going to tell this story again, I need there to be a reason beyond making the animation prettier.

After the newest trailer, I think we’re finally starting to see that reason.

Toei has now given us our clearest look yet at what this “ENHANCED” version of Dragonball Super is actually trying to accomplish. Dragonball Super: Beerus officially premieres in Japan on October 11, 2026, and Toei describes the project as featuring newly added and redrawn footage, reconstructed story elements, re-rendered visuals, newly recorded dialogue, and changes to the score and sound effects. But the biggest thing for me isn’t even Beerus anymore.

It’s everything Toei just showed us that comes after Beerus.

We’re Not Stopping With the Beerus Arc

When Dragonball Super: Beerus was originally announced, one of my biggest questions was how much of Super they were actually planning to redo.

Now we have a much better idea.

The newest footage doesn’t just show Beerus. We see Frieza, and we also see characters and material connected to the Universe 6 vs. Universe 7 tournament, including Hit. That strongly indicates that this enhanced retelling is moving beyond the Beerus material into the Resurrection ‘F’ and Universe 6 portions of Dragonball Super. (DRAGON BALL OFFICIAL SITE)

And personally, that’s when this project becomes much more interesting to me.

Because if we’re going through multiple arcs, Toei isn’t simply polishing one controversial section of the anime. They’re potentially rebuilding the early portion of Dragonball Super into something more cohesive.

That is exactly what I wanted this project to be.

Resurrection ‘F’ Might Benefit From This More Than Anything

If there’s one early Dragonball Super arc that desperately deserves another chance, it’s Resurrection ‘F.’

The movie has its fans, but when the story was adapted for television, it became one of the most criticized portions of the original Super anime. This is where the idea of an “enhanced” edition makes sense to me.

Improve the pacing.

Improve the animation.

Reconstruct scenes where necessary.

Make Goku and Vegeta’s progression with god ki feel more natural. Give Frieza’s return the weight it should have had. And based on what we’ve seen, Toei might be doing more than simply redrawing the exact same story.

That’s where one particular shot of Goku caught my attention.

Wait... Goku Is Using Super Saiyan God During Resurrection ‘F’?

This might be one of the most interesting details in the entire trailer.

The new footage appears to show Goku using Super Saiyan God during the Resurrection ‘F’ portion of the story.

That’s important because Goku did not use Super Saiyan God against Frieza in the original *Resurrection ‘F’ movie or the original Dragonball Super television adaptation of that storyline. The focus instead moved to Super Saiyan Blue, with Goku and Vegeta revealing the transformation against Golden Frieza.

So seeing the red-haired Super Saiyan God Goku associated with this section of the new version immediately raises questions.

If the footage is presented in the story the way the trailer suggests, that’s an actual change.

And I LOVE that!

Super Saiyan God Deserved More Time

I’ve always thought Super Saiyan God got done dirty by how quickly Dragonball moved past it.

Think about how massive that transformation was supposed to be in Battle of Gods. Goku needed the power of other Saiyans just to reach this legendary godly state capable of allowing him to challenge Beerus.

It completely changed the scale of Dragonball.

Then Resurrection ‘F’ happens and suddenly we’re already moving on to Super Saiyan Blue.

Super Saiyan God barely had time to breathe.

That’s why putting the form into Resurrection ‘F’ could actually improve Goku’s progression. Instead of going from obtaining Super Saiyan God against Beerus to immediately showing up with a completely new god transformation against Frieza, we could potentially watch Goku become more comfortable accessing and using God first.

Then Blue can feel like the next step.

That is a small change on paper, but narratively, it makes a lot more sense to me.

This Is What I Wanted “Enhanced” to Mean

When Toei announced Dragonball Super: Beerus, they were very specific with their wording.

This isn’t being presented as simply an HD remaster. Toei says the project contains extensive new cuts, revisions to existing scenes, re-rendered footage, newly recorded dubbing, additional music and sound effects, and a reconstructed story designed to represent Akira Toriyama’s ideas and worldbuilding more accurately. That’s a huge distinction.

If you’re reconstructing the story, then I want changes.

Not changes for the sake of changing Dragonball, but changes that improve things we already know could have been handled better.

Goku using Super Saiyan God during Resurrection ‘F’ is exactly the kind of thing that makes me interested in watching these arcs again.

I’ve already watched this story.

Give me a reason to experience it again.

Universe 6 vs. Universe 7 Is Where Things Get Even More Interesting

Then we have the Universe 6 vs. Universe 7 material.

This is where Dragonball Super really begins moving away from retelling the two movies and starts establishing its own identity. Champa, Vados, Hit, Cabba and the idea of multiple universes dramatically expand the world.

It also gives us one of my favorite concepts from early Super: Goku and Vegeta realizing that Universe 7 isn’t the only place where Saiyans exist.

If Toei is going through this arc with the same level of reconstruction, I’m extremely curious about what gets changed.

Are fights going to be expanded?

Will character interactions be rewritten?

Will the pacing be tighter?

Will certain manga concepts be incorporated?

How much closer will this version actually be to Toriyama’s original ideas?

Those are the questions that make this project exciting.

The Manga Question Is Still Complicated

I do think we have to be careful when calling this a completely “manga-accurate” Dragonball Super remake.

Dragonball Super has always had a complicated relationship between its anime and manga versions. They aren’t simply a traditional situation where an anime faithfully adapts a completed manga chapter by chapter. Both versions developed from Toriyama’s broader story material and sometimes took significantly different paths.

Resurrection ‘F’ makes this even more interesting because the Dragonball Super manga didn’t provide a full traditional adaptation of that storyline.

So when Toei talks about making the enhanced version more faithful to Toriyama’s original ideas and worldbuilding, I’m much more interested in seeing exactly what that means in practice than automatically assuming they’re copying Toyotarou’s manga panel for panel. (Toei Animation)

And Goku using Super Saiyan God during Resurrection ‘F’ may already be our first indication that they’re willing to rethink the original anime’s progression.

October 11 Is Officially the Date

We also finally have an exact Japanese premiere date.

Dragonball Super: Beerus will begin airing in Japan on Sunday, October 11, 2026 at 11:15 PM JST. The new announcement also revealed the opening theme, “ONOGAMI” by MEGATERA・ZERO, and the ending theme, “Kan Peki No Peki” by VK Blanka. (アニメ『ドラゴンボール超 ビルス』公式サイト)

There’s also going to be an advance screening of the first episode at New York Comic Con on October 8, just a few days before the Japanese television premiere. (DRAGON BALL OFFICIAL SITE)

So we’re officially past speculation about whether Dragonball Super is returning.

It’s returning.

The bigger question now is how different this version of Super is going to be.

Final Thoughts: This Could Become the Definitive Version of Early Dragonball Super

I’m still not ready to declare Dragonball Super: Beerus the definitive version of Super before we’ve actually watched it. There are still too many questions.

But this new trailer made me considerably more excited.

Starting with Beerus makes sense because that’s where the modern era of Dragonball Super begins. Moving into Resurrection ‘F’ gives Toei an opportunity to improve one of the anime’s weakest adaptations. Continuing into Universe 6 vs. Universe 7 shows that this project has ambitions beyond simply remaking Battle of Gods.

And Goku apparently using Super Saiyan God during Resurrection ‘F’ might seem like a small detail, but to me, that’s one of the biggest signs that Toei understands what would make this worth watching.

Don’t just redraw Dragonball Super.

Fix it. Expand it. Connect things better. Give transformations room to matter. Give characters more development. Take advantage of knowing where the story eventually goes.

We’ve spent years asking when Dragonball Super would return.

Now it finally is.

And apparently, before Dragonball moves forward, Toei wants another shot at getting its beginning right.
