The Misunderstood Legacy of DragonBall: Why New-Gen Anime Fans Need to Give Credit Where It's Due
Debunking the Myths and Misconceptions About the Plot and Influence of the Dragon Ball Series
In recent years, there has been a growing trend of criticism directed at the iconic Dragon Ball series. As new generations of anime fans are introduced to high-quality, plot-driven series such as Demon Slayer, Attack on Titan, Jujutsu Kaisen, My Hero Academia, and Chainsaw Man, many have taken to social media to disparage Dragon Ball, claiming it lacks a coherent plot and depth. However, this wave of criticism often overlooks the series’ rich storytelling and immense influence on the anime industry. It’s time to set the record straight and recognize the true value of Dragon Ball.
New-Gen Anime: A New Standard of Excellence
There’s no denying that the new generation of anime has raised the bar in terms of animation quality and narrative complexity. Demon Slayer captivates with its stunning visuals and emotional depth. Attack on Titan offers a gripping and intricate storyline filled with political intrigue and moral ambiguity. Jujutsu Kaisen blends supernatural elements with compelling character development. My Hero Academia reimagines the superhero genre with a fresh perspective. Chainsaw Man pushes boundaries with its dark, edgy themes and unique storytelling style.
These series have set new standards, attracting a massive following and, in turn, creating a contrast with older series like Dragon Ball. However, this comparison often leads to unfair criticisms of Dragon Ball, suggesting that it lacks the sophistication and plot complexity of its successors.
The Myth of “No Plot”
A common refrain among critics is that Dragon Ball is simply about Goku getting more powerful, with no substantial plot. This view is a gross oversimplification and misrepresentation of the series. Each arc in Dragon Ball, from the original series to Dragon Ball Super, offers a diverse range of stories and challenges that extend far beyond mere power-ups.
The Red Ribbon Army Arc introduces political and military conflict, the Namek Saga brings a space-faring adventure filled with mystery and suspense, the Android and Cell Sagas explore themes of artificial intelligence and existential threats, while the Tournament of Power in Dragon Ball Super emphasizes teamwork, strategy, and the survival of universes. Each of these arcs is high in character development, intricate plots, and unique resolutions, showcasing a narrative depth that is often overlooked by detractors.
The Unrecognized Influence of Akira Toriyama
It is particularly surprising that Dragon Ball faces such harsh criticism when the creators of many popular new-gen anime openly credit Akira Toriyama and Dragon Ball as their inspiration. Hajime Isayama, the creator of Attack on Titan, has expressed admiration for Toriyama’s work. Kohei Horikoshi, the mind behind My Hero Academia, has cited Dragon Ball as a major influence on his storytelling and character design.
Toriyama’s groundbreaking work laid the foundation for the shonen genre, and without Dragon Ball, many of the beloved series today might not exist in their current form. It is a testament to Dragon Ball’s lasting impact that it continues to inspire new generations of mangaka and anime creators.
Respecting the Legacy
It’s perfectly acceptable to have personal preferences and to favor newer anime over Dragon Ball. However, it is important to recognize and respect the legacy of Dragon Ball and its contributions to the anime industry. The series has brought joy to millions and played a significant role in shaping the childhoods of countless fans around the world.
Dismissing Dragon Ball simply because of its age or because it doesn’t align with current trends is shortsighted and disregards its historical significance. Acknowledging its influence does not diminish the value of new-gen anime; rather, it provides a fuller appreciation of the genre’s evolution and diversity.
While it is natural for tastes to evolve and for new series to capture the imagination of anime fans, it is crucial to approach the criticism of older series like Dragon Ball with nuance and respect. Dragon Ball is not just about Goku getting stronger; it is a tapestry of diverse stories that have left an indelible mark on the anime landscape. The series has shaped not only the anime industry but also the childhoods of millions around the world, serving as a source of inspiration and wonder. Its iconic characters and moments have been referenced in countless other works, introducing many to manga and anime and broadening cultural horizons. Dragon Ball's influence extends to video games, where it has contributed to the popularity of anime-based games.
As we celebrate the innovation and artistry of new-gen anime, we must honor trailblazers like Dragon Ball that made these achievements possible. Akira Toriyama's creation laid the groundwork for the shonen genre and inspired generations of storytellers. Disregarding its impact overlooks the roots of a genre that continues to thrive and captivate audiences worldwide. Recognizing Dragon Ball's legacy enriches our appreciation for the genre's evolution, fostering a deeper understanding and respect for the art form as a whole. As the anime landscape evolves, let’s remember and celebrate the giants on whose shoulders it stands.
